Holiday Cottage in Gifford.

Greenbank Cottage is an ideal, warm and cosy base
from which to explore East Lothian on foot, by
bike or car. The High Street is quiet, situated on
the edge of the bleaching field, traditionally
used to bleach linen.
Within the village are two fine hotels providing
everything from morning coffee to bar meals and
fine dining (beer gardens for summer evenings
too). There is also a Co-op, newsagents/P.O. cafe
and hair dressers within the village.
Greenbank Cottage is a perfect holiday retreat
combining countryside peace with village
amenities. There are fine woodland walks direct
from the door. In forty minutes along the Gifford
water you may reach Yester castle, built for Sir
Hugo Gifford in 1267. He was reputed to be a
wizard and the remains of the castle qthe Goblin
Haq has leant its name to both to the qHobgoblin
Hall in Sir Walter Scott's 'Marmion' and to the
well known hostelry 'The Goblin Ha' in Gifford
Main Street.
Somewhat more elevated is the summit of Lammer
Law, a good two hour hike, often splendid views
over East Lothian to the Firth of Forth and the
Highlands beyond to the North and the Borders
Hills dominated by the Cheviots to the south. On
the hill foot road three miles to the south lies
Pishwanton Community Wood, Centre for Goethean
Science and Art where the Life Science Trust hold
exciting courses throughout the year in wonderful
hand craft built buildings. They also accept
volunteers to work on the land and learn
traditional skills.
